The three main strategy categories
Hard totals are hands without an Ace, or where the Ace counts as 1 (to avoid busting). The key rules: always stand on hard 17 or higher, always hit hard 8 or less, double down on hard 10 or 11 against dealer 2–9, and stand on hard 13–16 against dealer 2–6 (bust cards).
Soft totals contain an Ace counted as 11. Soft hands give you extra flexibility because you cannot bust by taking one card. Double on soft 13–18 when the dealer shows 4, 5, or 6 (their weakest cards). Stand on soft 19 or higher.
Pair splitting is often underused. Always split Aces and Eights. Never split Tens or Fives. Split Twos, Threes, Sixes, and Sevens against dealer 2–7.

Blackjack paying 6:5 instead of 3:2 adds 1.39% to the house edge in a single rule change — wiping out all the benefit of perfect strategy. Always confirm the blackjack payout before sitting down. If a table pays 6:5, walk away.
