Texas Hold'em Poker for Beginners: Rules, Hand Rankings, and How to Play Your First Hand

Texas Hold'em is the form of poker played in the World Series of Poker and broadcast on television worldwide. It is also the foundation of casino Hold'em and many video poker variants. Understanding the rules is the first step to enjoying poker online or in a live casino.

The basic structure

Each player receives 2 private cards (hole cards). Five community cards are dealt face-up in the centre of the table. Players make the best 5-card hand using any combination of their 2 hole cards and the 5 community cards. The player with the best hand at showdown wins the pot.

The 10 hand rankings (highest to lowest)

1. Royal Flush: A-K-Q-J-10 all of the same suit. The rarest hand.
2. Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit. Example: 7-8-9-10-J of hearts.
3. Four of a Kind (Quads): Four cards of the same rank. Example: Q-Q-Q-Q-7.
4. Full House: Three of a kind plus a pair. Example: K-K-K-4-4.
5. Flush: Five cards of the same suit (not consecutive). Example: A-J-8-5-2 of diamonds.
6. Straight: Five consecutive cards of any suits. Example: 5-6-7-8-9 mixed suits.
7. Three of a Kind (Trips): Three cards of the same rank. Example: 9-9-9-K-2.
8. Two Pair: Two different pairs. Example: A-A-7-7-K.
9. One Pair: Two cards of the same rank. Example: J-J-8-5-2.
10. High Card: No combination — highest individual card plays. Example: A-K-Q-J-9 mixed suits.

The four betting rounds

Pre-Flop: Each player receives 2 hole cards. Betting begins with the player after the big blind. Options: Call (match the big blind), Raise (increase the bet), or Fold (discard your hand).

The Flop: Three community cards are dealt face-up. Another betting round occurs.

The Turn: A fourth community card is dealt. Another betting round.

The River: The fifth and final community card is dealt. Final betting round, then showdown.

Key beginner concepts

Position matters enormously: Acting last (being on the button) gives you information advantage — you see what others do before you must decide. Early position requires stronger hands; late position allows wider play.

Starting hand selection: As a beginner, focus on playing premium hands: A-A, K-K, Q-Q, J-J, A-K suited. Folding marginal hands pre-flop prevents most costly situations. Patience beats overplaying.
