Roulette Strategy Guide 2026: Which Systems Work, Which Are Myths, and What the Maths Says
Martingale, Fibonacci, D'Alembert — roulette strategies are everywhere. We run the maths on each major system, show why none can overcome the house edge, and explain the one thing that actually makes a difference.
Roulette has the most documented betting systems of any casino game. None of them can overcome the mathematical house edge — but understanding why, and what they do change, makes you a more informed player.
The house edge that all strategies must face
European Roulette has 37 pockets (0–36). A winning straight-up bet pays 35:1 but should statistically pay 36:1 for a fair game. This gap creates a house edge of 1/37 = 2.70% on all bets. Every strategy you employ must operate within this mathematical reality: for every £100 wagered, the house expects to keep £2.70 regardless of how you structure your bets.
The Martingale system
How it works: double your bet after each loss, return to base after each win. Example: bet £10, lose, bet £20, lose, bet £40, lose, bet £80, win — recovering all losses plus £10 profit.
The mathematical reality: Martingale does not change the expected value. On each spin you face the same 2.70% house edge. What Martingale does change is the distribution of outcomes — you win frequently (whenever you win before the sequence runs out) but occasionally lose catastrophically (when a losing streak hits the table maximum or exhausts your bankroll). In the long run, the expected loss per total amount wagered is identical to flat betting.
The practical failure: After 8 consecutive losses starting from £10 (a probability of approximately 1 in 400 over even-money roulette), the required bet is £2,560. Most casinos have table limits of £500–£2,000 that prevent this. The table limit is the mechanism that eliminates the theoretical recovery guarantee.
Fibonacci system
Use the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...) as your bet amounts, moving up after losses and back two positions after wins. Slower loss escalation than Martingale with the same mathematical outcome — the house edge applies identically to each bet.
D'Alembert system
Increase bets by one unit after a loss, decrease by one after a win. The mildest of the negative-progression systems. Produces less extreme loss scenarios than Martingale but with the same long-run expected loss rate.
The one thing that genuinely changes your outcomes
Game selection. The house edge on European Roulette (2.70%) versus French Roulette with La Partage (1.35% on even-money bets) is a genuine mathematical difference. Over 1,000 spins betting £10 on even money: European = expected loss £270; French with La Partage = expected loss £135. No betting system produces this difference — only choosing the right variant does. Always play French Roulette with La Partage when available, and European as the default. Never play American Roulette (5.26% edge).
