Wager-Free Bonuses vs Standard Bonuses: Which Is Actually Worth More?
A £25 wager-free bonus sounds less impressive than a £100 bonus with 35× wagering — but the maths often reverses that intuition entirely. We calculate real expected value for both so you can compare properly.
Casino bonus marketing focuses on headline amounts. A £100 welcome bonus sounds better than a £25 wager-free cash reward. But expected value calculation often reverses this intuition entirely.
Standard bonus expected value
Formula: EV = Bonus Amount − (Total Wagering Required × House Edge)
Example: £100 bonus, 35× wagering, 96% RTP slots (4% house edge)
- Total wagering: £100 × 35 = £3,500
- Expected loss: £3,500 × 0.04 = £140
- EV = £100 − £140 = −£40
You expect to lose £40 more by claiming this bonus than by skipping it.
Wager-free bonus expected value
A wager-free bonus is credited directly to your real money balance with no wagering requirement. The full amount is immediately withdrawable (subject to maximum withdrawal limits).
Example: £25 wager-free bonus
- No wagering required
- EV = £25 (minus any maximum withdrawal restriction)
The £25 wager-free bonus has a dramatically higher expected value than the £100 standard bonus above.
When standard bonuses are worth claiming
A standard bonus is worth claiming when EV is positive. This requires:
- Low wagering requirement (20× or under)
- High bonus amount relative to wagering
- High-RTP game access during wagering (which most casinos restrict)
Example of a positive-EV bonus: £100 bonus, 20× wagering, 97% RTP (3% house edge)
- Total wagering: £2,000
- Expected loss: £2,000 × 0.03 = £60
- EV = £100 − £60 = +£40
Sticky bonuses (non-cashable)
Some bonuses state the bonus amount itself cannot be withdrawn — only bonus winnings above the bonus amount can. These dramatically reduce EV because even after successful wagering, you cannot withdraw the bonus stake. Read the terms carefully before claiming.
